Progression 2015 - a celebration of deaf arts

Progression 2015 - a celebration of deaf arts

Solar Bear took over the Citizens Theatre on 24 & 25 September to celebrate deaf arts through inclusive and integrated workshops and performances. Around 45 participants each day took part in workshops run by leading practitioners in deaf arts - Jenny Sealey (Graeae Theatre), Caroline Parker, Jennifer Bates (The Deaf and Hearing Ensemble), Josette Bushell-Mingo (Tyst Teater, Sweden), Katrina Fisher (Solar Bear) and Claire Lamont and Dr Oliver Searle (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).

Deaf and hearing participants from all over the UK arrived at the Citizens Theatre on the morning of the 24th and for the next two days the theatre was filled with laughter, conversation and performance. New friendships and contacts were formed and ideas were shared.

It was heartening to hear that participants from other parts of the UK are inspired by the work of Solar Bear, especially Deaf Youth Theatre and Deaf Theatre Club, and were looking for advice as to how to move that forward in their areas.

Russian theatre company, Nedoslov, performed on Thursday evening, but they also took part in and led workshops with the participants, and actors from Tyst Teater, Sweden worked with members of DYT and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland & Reid Kerr students to produce a shared performance of Wonderland, developed in a workshop that day.

Our performance of Kind of Silence and screening of A Love Divided were well received by everyone and showed the work that Solar Bear is doing to make arts accessible to deaf and hard of hearing actors and audiences.

A fantastic team of BSL Interpreters helped make the event go smoothly and also worked with Russian and international sign language interpreters to ensure that all events were truly inclusive to all.

The Citizens Theatre were fantastic hosts and thanks go to all the staff who helped make this event possible. Thanks also go to Creative Scotland for funding to help make this event possible.

Here are just a small selection of photographs from the event.
